Mark was born in Aberdeen, North East Scotland. He was educated at Dyce Primary School and Dyce Academy before going on to gain an MA in Politics from the University of Dundee and an MLitt in Strategic Studies from the University of Aberdeen.
From 2003 to 2011, Mark worked as a personal assistant to MSPs Richard Lochhead, Maureen Watt and Nigel Don. He was elected to Aberdeen City Council in 2007, representing Dyce, Bucksburn and Danestone. In 2011 he was elected to the Scottish Parliament from the North East Scotland regional list. He was returned as MSP for Aberdeen Donside in June 2013 and again in 2016.
