Significant progress made.
A follow up report, by the Chief Medical Officer, into the running of the emergency department at Ninewells hospital, has found that significant progress has been made.
CMO Dr Catherine Calderwood, visited the emergency department at Ninewells in June 2015 to investigate concerns around patient safety in A&E.
Following her visit the CMO made a number of recommendations and committed to returning to the hospital in six months to monitor progress.
Recommendations made by the CMO included improving communication links between consultants from all specialities that interact with the emergency department and sharing good practice across the health board.
Speaking after her follow-up visit, Dr Calderwood said:
"During my initial visit I was satisfied that the principles that underpin NHS Tayside's emergency department model is patient safety and outcome focused and not target driven.
"However, it was apparent that at times the communication between emergency department staff and other speciality teams was not always as good as it could be.
"To tackle this I suggested several recommendations on the back of my findings. This included improving communication links between consultants from all specialities that have involvement with the emergency department.
"Having returned to review progress at Ninewells I am satisfied that significant progress has been achieved in delivering these recommendations.
"It is evident that increased communication and collaboration with speciality departments and A&E has resulted in improved inter-department relationships and improved patient focused care. Good practice is also being shared via the guide for doctors interacting with emergency medicine which has been extended to provide guidance on all unscheduled care departments.
"Further improvements between emergency medicine and general surgery are still underway with the opportunity provided by the 'Shaping Surgical Services' review delivering increased communication and collaborative working."
