Recruiting international students

Japan joins star programme.

Japanese postgraduates will be able to apply for funding to study at Scottish universities thanks to a flagship scholarship programme aimed at recruiting international students.

Currently, Saltire Scholarships offer students from Canada, China, India, Pakistan and the USA financial support to come to Scotland to study in world leading universities with a long tradition of academic excellence.

The fund offers 50 scholarships worth £8,000 each available in any one year, co-funded by the Scottish Government and the universities.

External Affairs Secretary Fiona Hyslop, who has just returned from a week-long trade and culture mission to Japan and Republic of Korea, said:

“We want to increase the overall number of students from Japan studying in Scotland. It will also increase and strengthen connections between people and institutions to support Scotland’s broader engagement with Japan.

“We are committed to attracting talented students from other countries to our world class universities and pioneering work in areas such as science, technology, creative industries, healthcare and medical sciences, and renewable and clean energy

“From 2018-19 onwards we will be working with the universities and other partners to run a substantial engagement programme for Saltire scholars while they are in Scotland. This will help them form key alumni in relation to each priority country, which will help them as they study but will also help them keep in touch with each other and Scotland in the future.

“While only a small handful of students from each priority country receive scholarships, research shows that the Saltire Scholarship programme encourages potential students to investigate the possibility of studying in Scotland, with many following through with applications to Scottish universities regardless of whether or not they receive financial support.”
