Scottish Annual Business Statistics 2014

A National Statistics Publication for Scotland.

Scotland’s Chief Statistician today released Scottish Annual Business Statistics 2014.

The main findings include:

In 2014, approximate Gross Value Added (GVA) in the services sector amounted to £51.4 billion, compared to £13.4 billion in manufacturing and £6.6 billion in the construction sector.

In 2014, within the services sector, the three largest contributions to GVA came from: retail trade at £6.9 billion (13.5 per cent of total services GVA), architectural/engineering activities at £5.3 billion (10.3 per cent) and wholesale trade at £4.6 billion (9.0 per cent).

In 2014, within manufacturing, the three largest contributions to GVA came from: the beverages sector at £2.1 billion (15.5 per cent of total manufacturing GVA), food products at £1.7 billion (12.9 per cent) and ‘manufacture of fabricated & metal products’ at £1.5 billion (11.2 per cent).

In 2014, the local authority areas contributing most to GVA within manufacturing were Aberdeen City (12.4 per cent), Fife (8.9 per cent) and Glasgow City (8.8 per cent).

In 2014, within construction, foreign-owned businesses accounted for 5.7 per cent of GVA, whereas within manufacturing, foreign-owned businesses accounted for 44.2 per cent of GVA.

The figures released today were produced in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

The Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS) are based on the Annual Business Survey (ABS) conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Summary 2014 data, for all regions and countries within the UK, were published by ONS on 21 July 2016 and are available at: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/abs/annual-business-survey/index.html

The results published today present more detailed 2014 figures for Scotland, with revised figures for 2013.

The publication includes financial and employment statistics on businesses operating in Scotland, by industry sector, local authority area and business ownership. The statistics cover approximately two thirds of the economy and are best suited to analyses of individual industries rather than the Scottish economy as a whole. The financial sector and parts of agricultural sector and parts of the public sector are not included in the SABS data.

The latest SABS results include the first release of GVA and Turnover data for the Scottish Government’s Growth Sectors. Data for the Growth Sectors, covering the period from 2008 to 2014, are summarised at:
