Building Standards technical handbook 2017: non-domestic

Guidance on how to comply with Scottish building regulations.

This handbook provides guidance on how to comply with the building regulations created by Scottish Ministers.

This handbook is also available as an accessible HTML web-based document

Only the latest versions have been transitioned. Gov.scot currently hosts all previous technical handbooks.

The handbook is divided into eight sections, a general introductory chapter and seven named sections:

  • structure, section one
  • fire, section two
  • environment, section three
  • safety, section four
  • noise, section five
  • energy, section six
  • sustainability, section seven

We also produce appendix A and B for the technical handook. These define key terms, as well as listing different standards and other publications for context.

More information

This is one of two technical handbooks we produce. The other provides guidance on how to comply with domestic building regulations.

The technical handbooks are supported by a procedural handbook, which provides context for the Building (Scotland) Procedures Regulations 2004.
