Annex A1: Glossary

The majority of the terms in these Guidelines are familiar and in everyday use. Most community pharmacists will know what they mean by them; however, they are defined here to aid interpretation.

Advice

The oral or written provision of professional opinion.

Compliance

Adherence to a course of instructions for the
use of a medicine or an appliance.

Counselling

The interactive process involving a consultation about medicines or appliances between a pharmacist and a patient.

OTC

Over-the-counter (medicine).

Output

A desired or actual result of the counselling and advice process which is able to be measure or verified objectively.

P

Pharmacy medicine.

PIL

Patient information leaflet.

POM

Prescription-only medicine.

Patient

Anyone receiving pharmaceutical services.

Patient medication record ( PMR)

A record of the medicines and appliances dispensed for, and/or purchased by, or on behalf of, a patient, together with details of interventions, counselling, advice and
outcomes where appropriate.
