Palm oil usage in Government buildings: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

FOI reference: FOI/18/01380
Date received: 15 May 2018
Date responded: 5 June 2018

Information requested

  1. How much of your catering requires the use of products that make use of palm oil?

  2. Does the government try to limit this?

  3. Is there any commitment to defining sustainably sourced palm oil within procurement of products?

Response

The Scottish Government currently provides catering services, through a contractor, at seven sites across Scotland. I can confirm that in 2013, the Scottish Government took the decision to remove all products containing Palm Oil from it's 'home run' catering and kitchen facilities.

The commitment to refrain from using Palm Oil holds firm to this day. This is re-affirmed within the procurement paperwork released to would-be contractors when the contract is advertised and must be adhered to by any successful contractor.
