Minister for Local Government Empowerment and Planning: resignation letters

Letter between Minister for Local Government Empowerment and Planning Joe FitzPatrick and the First Minister

Letter from Minister for Local Government Empowerment and Planning Joe FitzPatrick to First Minister John Swinney – 8 May 2024

Dear John,

I supported your candidacy and I look forward to your leadership of the SNP and to you delivering your policy programme as FM.

However, I believe that this would be a good opportunity for me to step down from my role as Minister for Local Government Empowerment and Planning.

It has been an honour to serve in the last government and I am proud of working with COSLA and Scotland's 32 local authorities during that time, particularly to deliver a council tax freeze to support people through the current Westminster made cost living crisis.

I know it's progressive policies like this that can make a difference to people and you will continue to take forward as First Minister and I commend your focus on child poverty. I will support you in your endeavours but feel it would be best to do so out of government.

Yours for Scotland

Joe FitzPatrick

Letter from First Minister John Swinney to Minister for Local Government Empowerment and Planning Joe FitzPatrick – 8 May 2024

Dear Joe

Thank you for your letter and your expression of support which I value.

You are right to note the part you played in ensuring people did not have to pay any increase in their council tax this year and I know that you have always sought to put people first. You have been an integral part of the SNP Group since your election as an MSP and will continue to be so.

As a Councillor and MSP I have always admired your dedication and commitment to those you represent and know you will continue to do that for the people of Dundee City West.

With best wishes for the future.

Yours for Scotland

John Swinney
