Low-level pollution - health impacts: evidence review

This review explores the existing evidence on the health effects associated with low-level pollution in countries that have levels of ambient air pollution similar to Scotland.

Footnotes

1 N.B. Studies evaluated one or more pollutants, hence the total for this table is greater than the number of included studies (n=47)

2 The current European Union limit values are equivalent to UK objectives (“The Air Quality Standards Regulations 2010,” n.d.). The annual mean Air Quality Objectives for the protection of public health in Scotland are 10 μg/m3 for PM2.5 and 40 μg/m3 for NO2 (https://www.scottishairquality.scot/air-quality/standards)

3 The coarse fraction contains the larger particles with a size ranging from 2.5 to 10 µm (PM10 - PM2.5).
